Traditional Cup

The Japanese Tea Ceremony, or The Way of Tea, defines a long standing art and tradition of preparing and presenting the perfect cup of Matcha. During the tea ceremony the rules of preparation must be strictly followed and adhered; however, when you are preparing a cup of Matcha for yourself, at home, you may simplify. Still, this way must be done correctly as preparation has a very significant impact on how well the cup of Matcha will taste. Here are some basic instructions to help you prepare the perfect cup of Matcha, traditional style!

    •

      1.   Preheat the Matcha bowl by pouring hot water into it.

      2.   Moisten the bamboo whisk with hot water to soften it and prevent the powder from sticking to it.

      3.   Pour out the water and dry your bowl with a cloth.

      4.   Scoop out about about 3/4 teaspoon of Matcha into your bowl.

      5.   Pour 3 to 4 ounces of 175°F water over the Matcha.

        6.   Whisk until all the powder clumps are broken up and there is a nice, frothy lather on top.

How To Whisk Properly

After you have poured hot water over your Matcha and have moistened the whisk, gently scrape along the bottom (and sides if necessary) of the bowl in a circular motion. This will pick up the Matcha sticking to the bowl. Using your wrist, whisk up and down the bowl in quick back and forth motions while creating a sort of "W" pattern to get around the entire bowl. Do so until you have broken up all the clumps of powder and have created a nice frothy lather on top.

Regular Hot Tea

This is a more diluted version of the traditional cup and if you do not have a Matcha bowl and/or whisk, this might be an easier way to make a cup of hot Matcha. First, Stir or whisk 3/4 teaspoons of Matcha into 1 to 2 ounces of 175°F water. Use a small amount of water so that you can stir or whisk more aggressively without splashing and spilling. Then, simply fill the rest of the cup with more hot water to your liking. Sweeten to Taste!

Iced Tea

Stir or whisk 3/4 teaspoons of Matcha into 1 to 2 ounces of 175°F water. You may use cold water instead, but using hot water initially is preferred, as it bring out more flavor and aroma. After, throw some ice over it until chilled. If you prefer it more diluted, pour some more cold water over it as well.

On The Go

Matcha Latte

First, stir or whisk about 3/4 teaspoons of Matcha into 1 to 2 ounces of 175°F water. Then, pour hot milk over it using at least the same amount as you used of water. The milk should be around 175°F as well. Sweeten to taste! This drink goes well with cinnamon.

Iced Matcha Latte

Stir or whisk about 3/4 teaspoons of Matcha into 1 to 2 ounces of 175°F water. Pour cold milk over it using at least the same amount as you used of water. Finally, add as much ice as desired.
